FROM SAARLAND TO SPAIN, VIA LUNCH IN THE SCHMELZWERK

Sunday, February 26, 2017, 12 noon

Paella with mussels and shrimps

Why, you might ask, would celebrated chef Markus Herbicht, who originally hails from Germany’s Saarland region, offer to make a paella for the eat! berlin gourmet festival? Because he can, and outstandingly well at that. In fact, there’s likely no one else in this city capable of doing it quite like him. This rice dish tends to be an under-appreciated art, but Herbicht was initiated into its mysteries during his tenure (1998-2002) as executive chef of the newly opened 5-star Kempinski Hotel Estepona

His work there led some to proclaim him as the most innovative chef in Andalusia. And yet the accolades were earned based on more than just his formidable talent; they also reflect an outstanding education and time spent working the stations of the kitchen under Johann Lafer and at Käfer in Munich, among other stops. He has cooked in Thailand for the king, in Germany for Madonna, Michael Jackson, Angela Merkel, Ronald Reagan and many other grand names from politics and entertainment.

Don’t miss your chance to try Herbicht’s paella once in life. Spanish guitar and plenty of cava, wine and ham will be on hand for this joyous jaunt to the coast of Spain. Things will wrap up with a proper crema catalana as well.
55.00 EUR per person covers food, wine, water and coffee — but not the siesta afterwards.
